RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:

In this study, the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) has taken a closer look at penile cosmetic enhancement procedures to help guide both patients and healthcare providers. They reviewed all available scientific literature up to December 2023, focusing on invasive procedures like injections and surgeries. Non-invasive treatments, such as vacuum or penile traction devices, were not included because they have a different risk and benefit profile.

Key Findings

  • Injectable fillers: Limited data suggest potential benefits for increasing penis girth, with an acceptable safety profile. However, more research is needed.

  • Suspensory ligament division (a surgical technique): May increase flaccid penis length in experienced hands, but should only be considered after a thorough discussion of potential complications.

  • Graft-and-flap procedures: Not recommended until more data is available due to potential complications and limited long-term information.

  • Silicone sleeve implants: Should only be done under strict oversight and by experienced surgeons, with a thorough discussion of potentially severe complications.

  • Sliding/slicing techniques: Considered experimental and should only be done under strict oversight and by experienced surgeons, with thorough discussion of potentially severe complications

Bottom line: Many of these procedures are still considered experimental and more research is needed, especially long-term studies on safety and effectiveness.

Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:

A Question from a subscriber: “How does one self check for testicular cancer? What sort of symptoms and abnormalities are we looking for?

Answer:

To perform a testicular self-exam, usually the best time is right after a warm shower or bath when the scrotum is relaxed. Stand in front of a mirror if possible, and use both hands to gently roll each testicle between your fingers, feeling the entire surface. During this exam you want to feel for the presence of lumps or nodules on the testicle's surface, which might be as small as a pea. Other signs include changes in size or weight of one testicle compared to the other, pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen or groin, swelling in the scrotum, changes in texture (the testicle should feel firm but not hard), a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, or a sudden collection of fluid. It's important to note that not all lumps or changes indicate cancer - for instance, you might feel the epididymis, a tube at the back of each testicle. However, if you notice any of these changes, you should see a urologist promptly. Testicular cancer is highly treatable, especially when caught early, which is why I recommend monthly self-exams. Remember, many testicular lumps are not cancerous, but it's always best to have them checked by a professional.

WHAT’S NEW WITH DR. MALIK?:

I talk about the importance of sleep a lot but I am the first to admit I am not great at sleeping enough. Last week though I had the best sleep scores I've ever had! Likely because I'm lifting heavier and walking more so I'm just so tired by the end of the day that my sleep is deeper. Another reason to get out and get 10,000 steps and continue resistance training at least 3 times a week with progressive overload.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE CHANNEL:

In our latest podcast episode, "Will her toy replace me? | Stop Believing these 5 Female Masturbation Myths", Dr. Malik explores myths and truths surrounding female masturbation. This episode is essential listening for anyone looking to enhance their understanding of female sexual health.

Here's a sneak peek of what we discussed:

Myth 1: Masturbation is uncommon or abnormal for women
  • Research shows that masturbation is very common among women, with up to 94% of women in survey studies reporting masturbating within the past 12 to 24 months.

Myth 2: Women only masturbate with dildos
  • A diverse range of methods is used by women, with 97% utilizing clitoral stimulation and less than half using vaginal insertion. Erotic enhancements and sexual fantasies also play a significant role.

Myth 3: Masturbation will replace a man
  • Masturbation is not replacing sex but complementing it. Women who masturbate tend to have more partnered sex, suggesting a higher libido rather than a replacement for their partners.

Myth 4: Masturbation is harmful or addictive
  • There is no scientific evidence supporting that masturbation is harmful or addictive. In fact, it has many benefits including stress relief, improved sleep, pain relief, and enhanced body image.

Myth 5: Masturbation will make it difficult for women to orgasm during partnered sex
  • Frequent masturbators report higher orgasmic pleasure. While using certain techniques like vibrators might make it challenging to replicate the experience with a partner, it can be balanced with communication and exploration.

Bonus Tip: Feel free to incorporate toys into your intimate moments with your partner for a new and exciting experience!
