RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:
A recent study looked at how women's sexual desire and arousal are connected, especially for those with a condition called Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (SIAD), which makes it hard for them to feel interested in sex.
The study involved 100 women in relationships, 27 of whom have SIAD and the researchers had the women watch a sexual film while their physical arousal was measured. Their desire for sex was checked before and after the film, and again three days later.
Key Findings:
Physical Arousal: Women with SIAD showed higher physical arousal than those without the disorder.
Responsive Desire: The main difference was in how this physical arousal translated into sexual desire.
For women with SIAD and low relationship satisfaction, higher arousal led to lower immediate desire for their partners.
For women with SIAD and high relationship satisfaction, higher arousal led to a positive or neutral increase in desire.
In conclusion, women with SIAD can feel aroused, but whether this leads to sexual desire depends on their relationship happiness. Improving relationship satisfaction might help women with SIAD feel more desire.
Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:
A Question from a subscriber: “Does nitric oxide supplements actually help with ED? Or is it a waste of money?”
Answer:
The data on nitric oxide supplements is limited. It's best to promote nitric oxide production by keeping your blood vessels healthy. You can do this with a heart-healthy diet and regular physical exercise of 150 minutes per week. If you're suffering from ED, consider medications like tadalafil or sildenafil that are FDA-regulated and safer than unregulated, unproven supplements.
