RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:
Did you know that sleep disorders could be silently worsening your urinary symptoms? A systematic study and expert consensus explored how conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, and restless legs syndrome impact nighttime urination. The study found that people with sleep disorders often wake easily and that goes hand in hand with nighttime urination.
Getting these sleep disorders or issues treated can help you wake up less at night to urinate.
Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:
A Question from a subscriber: “What is the recovery time after a radical prostatectomy does it take a man to regain sexual health. And would the surgery also affect libido?”
Answer:
Radical prostatectomy, or surgery to remove the prostate when you have prostate cancer. The initial recovery after surgery typically takes 4-6 weeks. After which about 40-60% of men will have erectile dysfunction. Very often we will start patients on a rehabilitation protocol to help optimize the return of erections but improvement can continue up to 18 months after surgery. Libido is typically not affected but if you take medications to decrease your testosterone after surgery, something called androgen deprivation therapy you will likely notice a decline in your sex drive.
