RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:

Marijuana use is becoming increasingly common, but its impact on sexual function remains debated. Some reports suggest benefits, while others point to potential drawbacks.

This study aimed to determine if there is a connection between marijuana use and sexual frequency among men and women in the U.S. Researchers analyzed data from a national survey spanning several years to examine how marijuana use correlates with sexual activity, accounting for various personal and demographic factors.

Key Findings:

  • For Women: Those who used marijuana monthly, weekly, or daily reported having sex more frequently than non-users.

  • For Men: Similar patterns were observed. Weekly and daily marijuana users had more frequent sexual encounters compared to those who did not use marijuana.

  • Overall Trend: Both men and women experienced a trend where more frequent marijuana use was associated with increased sexual activity.

The study indicates that marijuana use is connected to more frequent sexual activity and does not appear to impair sexual function. While these findings are promising, further research is needed to fully understand the effects of marijuana on sexual health.

Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:

A Question from a subscriber: “What can I do to increase my wife’s desire for sex?

Answer:

I often get asked how to improve a partner's libido. First, you need to talk to your partner to find out what’s going on for them. Are they too tired or too stressed to be in the mood for sex? If so, focus on helping with stress reduction and optimizing sleep. Also, determine if they feel their libido is lower than usual and if it bothers them. If they’re not bothered, they may lack the incentive to try to improve it.

Another important aspect is that in long-term relationships, partners often develop what's called responsive desire. They might not typically want to initiate sex, and when you do initiate, they may initially not be in the mood. However, as you continue to be intimate, they start enjoying the experience more. This is a response to the actual activity rather than a spontaneous desire, which is what we usually think of as libido. This is completely normal and can be addressed with education. You both might consider incorporating more scheduled time for intimacy into your routine, allowing your partner to be ready and enjoy that responsive desire.

Now, if your partner is experiencing hormonal changes, such as menopause, they may have a decrease in sex hormones specifically testosterone, which can significantly affect libido. In such cases, your partner could consult a doctor about improving testosterone levels or exploring medications like milana tide, which are FDA-approved for increasing low sexual desire in premenopausal women.

Vitamin D & Testosterone

  • Laboratory Findings: Early lab studies showed a substantial increase in testosterone production when Leydig cells (testosterone-producing cells in the testicles) were exposed to Vitamin D.

  • Human Study Data: In contrast, human studies have shown no significant impact on testosterone levels from Vitamin D supplementation. Dr. Malik reviewed a 2019 systematic review and a larger 2020 review with nearly 10,000 men to discuss findings and limitations.

  • Special Case Studies: Tune in for an interesting exception involving football players in Eastern Europe and their increased testosterone levels during the winter months thanks to Vitamin D supplementation.
