Stigma in Men’s Erectile Dysfunction Medication

Hey Fam!

Welcome to Yourology with Dr. Malik – your weekly prescription for the latest medical updates, valuable insights, and freshest highlights straight from the frontlines of medicine!

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:

In a recent publication, Dr. Justin Dubin highlighted that younger men are using erectile dysfunction (ED) medications not only for treating ED but also to address anxiety and performance-related concerns.

According to the findings, the top three reasons men use ED medications are:

  1. Performance anxiety with a a new partner (56%)

  2. Persistent issues with ED (46%)

  3. Desire for improved confidence in the bedroom (40%)

When acquiring ED meds, men prioritized privacy above cost and convenience. This trend is partly due to the normalization of these medications through marketing, and social media even among those without a high rate of ED. The post also revealed that half of men under 40 meet the criteria for ED, and nearly 40% have tried ED medications.

This shows the stigma surrounding men’s health. This suggests that men should feel more comfortable discussing their health concerns with medical professionals.

YOUR WEEKLY HEALTH TIPS:

Skip the Afternoon Caffeine Fix

I get it—this one's a real challenge for us coffee lovers. Cutting out caffeine after noon can make a huge difference in your sleep quality. I've personally experienced how much better I sleep without that late-day cup of joe.

Here's why it works: caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours, which means if you drink coffee, tea, or soda in the afternoon, a quarter of that caffeine is still in your system by midnight! Some people metabolize caffeine faster, so it might not affect them as much, but why not give it a try for a few days? You might wake up feeling more refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:

A Question from a subscriber: “I am 28 years old and I suddenly suffering from ED, I did everything my all results are good even i took 5mg cialis per need but i am not to get erection when i want. I neet outsource like handjob and bj to get me aroused. How i get back to normal?

Answer:

I'm sorry you're going through this! If you're finding that you're able to get a good erection when you are masturbating it might be that your body is getting habituated, or used to a certain stimulation that you can't replicate during penetrative vaginal sex. You may want to reconsider how you're masturbating or how you're getting aroused (using a certain type of erotic film) and take a break from either using too firm a grip, certain positions, or watching erotic films, to see if you can start getting aroused to normal stimulations. Also being stressed about having erections makes it hard to get erections, this is called psychogenic ED. Check out these videos to learn more about idiosyncratic masturbation and psychogenic erectile dysfunction.

WHAT’S NEW WITH DR. MALIK?:

This week I'm visiting my parents in Western New York and enjoying some quality time with them in my childhood home. I'll share an interesting memoir I've been reading about growing up in a South Asian household called. "They Called Us Exceptional: And Other Lies That Raised Us" The author's story revolves around her Indian American family, which seems like the perfect American dream: a doctor dad, a loving mom, and two kids who excel in everything. Unfortunately, behind closed doors, there is verbal abuse, mental health issues, and much more. I find this compelling because immigrating from another country with its own cultural norms presents challenges that often lead people to develop unhealthy patterns to remain "desirable" within their community and to outsiders. However, this can take a negative turn, creating unhealthy and unsafe environments for raising children. Fortunately, I grew up in a very loving household, but I have many friends whose lives have similar stories. It is an important story that needs to be told.
