RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:

Have you ever wondered what people fantasize about? Well this popular study looked at just that. They surveyed 1516 adults 799 women, and 717 men in Quebec and found that:

  • Most sexual fantasies are more common than previously thought, with only two being statistically rare and nine unusual.

  • Many fantasies once considered atypical are actually quite common, including themes of submission, domination, and various forms of role-play.

  • Gender differences exist in the prevalence and intensity of certain fantasies.

Why does this matter to you? Essentially you can feel okay about your thoughts and fantasies. Many people worry their fantasies are strange, but this study shows that having different sexual imaginations is totally normal. This can help people feel less embarrassed and more comfortable with themselves.

It's also great for couples. Knowing that lots of people have similar fantasies can make it easier to talk about what you like with your partner. But remember, just because you imagine something doesn't mean you want to or have to do it in real life.

Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:

A Question from a subscriber: “I am a 78 year old male. All the parts still work just the way they are supposed to, except I am not ejaculating nor having an orgasm. This only started when I started having severe low back pain, and started on gabapentin 6 mg three times a day. Is my understanding that not having and ejaculation is detrimental to the prostate. Your thoughts and recommendation please.

Answer:

Without knowing more about your medical history I can't comment on your issues with ejaculation and orgasms but I want you to rest assured that it's not detrimental to the prostate if you can't ejaculate. Very often men can develop retrograde ejaculation (where the semen goes backward into the bladder rather than out the urethra) due to medications, diabetes, or neurologic issues. Also, it's common for men to get a weaker ejaculate volume with age due to weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and an enlarged prostate.
