RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT:
As we grow older, many of us face increasing challenges with sleep, often due to waking up during the night to use the bathroom—a common issue known as nocturia.
This study shows that while few younger adults report nocturia, it actually affects nearly 80% of older adults, and this problem isn't specific to gender and becomes more common as we get older. Conditions like enlarged prostate and overactive bladder are often blamed, but treatments for these don't always fix the issue.
Furthermore, changes in sleep patterns and our body's natural rhythms as we age can contribute to nocturia, and hormones like vasopressin, aldosterone, and atrial natriuretic peptide influence how much urine our bodies produce throughout the day and night. So it indicates that even healthy older adults produce more urine at night compared to younger adults, despite similar sleep and fluid intake.
Key points:
Nocturia is a common cause of sleep disruption in older adults
Age-related changes in sleep depth and continuity may contribute to nocturia
Age-related changes in circadian rhythms can affect hormone levels involved in urine production
Nocturnal polyuria is a common feature of aging
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to nocturia
Understanding the relationship between sleep, circadian rhythms, and nocturia may lead to improved treatments and better quality of life for older adults.
Discussing these findings with your doctor can lead to personalized strategies, such as adjusting fluid intake or exploring treatments that target hormone imbalances or sleep disorders like sleep apnea. Taking proactive steps based on these insights can significantly enhance your nightly rest and overall well-being.
Q&A WITH DR. MALIK:
A Question from a subscriber: “I would like to know if UTI (staph and Proteus stuari) lead to quick ejaculation, because since I've had it, I often release in seconds while masturbating and also, does quick ejaculation in masturbation, mean quick ejaculation In sex.”
Answer:
A urinary tract infection, once treated, should not cause any issues with ejaculation. If you're all of a sudden having issues with ejaculation re-evaluate if things have changed in terms of your masturbation habits, erection strength, or relationship. You can try to do exercises or even buy a delay spray over the counter which may help prolong sex. If these don't work, be sure to see a urologist to see what alternatives are available.

Is DHEA Scientifically Proven to Boost Testosterone? Urologist Explains
With almost 40% of men over the age of 40 experiencing low testosterone symptoms like fatigue, erectile dysfunction, and cognitive changes, finding effective treatments has become crucial.
In our latest episode, Dr. Rena Malik explores the efficacy of popular testosterone boosters including androstenedione, androstenediol, and DHEA. Here are some key takeaways:
Androstenedione: Initial studies showed a short-term increase in testosterone levels, but these benefits did not sustain long-term. Moreover, risks like breast enlargement and unfavorable cholesterol profiles became evident.
Androstenediol: While free testosterone levels rose, total serum testosterone did not change. Upsettingly, the supplement also negatively impacted lipid profiles, increasing cardiovascular risks.
DHEA: Despite some increase in DHEA levels, no significant improvement in lean body mass, strength, or testosterone levels was observed. While lipids remained unaffected, estradiol levels did rise.
Given the complex metabolic pathways and the potential for adverse effects, these supplements are not the most effective or safe methods for boosting testosterone. Dr. Malik emphasizes the importance of consulting healthcare professionals and considering alternative approaches.
But worry not, because the series is far from over! Next week, the series will continue with an examination of Fenugreek (Trigonella funum-gracum). This exploration may offer additional insights into natural methods for testosterone enhancement.
